On a cold day in December of 2009, McKinney Rotarians Fred Bahrenburg and David Dorman began the first meeting of what would become the Melissa Rotary Club at the Melissa Fire Station. The only ones that accepted the invitation to see what Rotary was all about was Dr. Nadia Taiyari, Randy Kaiser, Johnny Maberry and J.J. Chapa.

“I remember our first meeting,” Dr. Nadia Taiyari, President of Melissa Rotary Club. “I didn’t even know what Rotary was and we were asked to come up with a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.” “There were only four of us in attendance so we all got a job.”

“To become an official club you have to get 20 charter members into the group,” Taiyari said. “Our first group project was to find our first 20 members so we could become an official club.”

The Melissa Rotary became a chartered Rotary Club on April 22, 2010. The group was chartered shortly after securing its 20 charter members.

In the meantime, the Melissa Rotary wasted no time in getting to work in Melissa and the surrounding area.

“Our mission is ‘service above self’”, said J.J. Chapa, Treasurer of Melissa Rotary Club. “To that end, we seek out places where we can help with our expertise, our spirit of volunteerism and our ability to help raise funds if need be.”
“When it came to finding a way to plug into Melissa, we hit the ground running,” Chapa said.

The Rotary’s first project raised $1,625 for a family who had recently experienced a house fire in Melissa. “We raised the funds in less than a month for this family and were able to help the family relocate.” Chapa said. The family’s dad was shipped to Iraq soon thereafter but left knowing that his family had a new home.

Other projects that the Rotary has been a part of was participation in both parades where they gave out American Flags (July 4th Parade) and candy canes (Christmas Parade). The Rotary also passed out candy canes at the city’s Christmas In the Park event. The Rotary also gave a $300 gift to CASA’s Capital Campaign, contributed $1,560.00 to the Melissa Boy Scouts, completely furnished a one bedroom apartment for the Samaritan Inn in McKinney for a homeless family, created the Melissa Flag Lease Program, contributed funds to Melissa High School for an after-prom party and have created a very aggressive service project menu for 2011.

The Rotary raised over $10,100 in 2010, most of which went back into the community or will go back into the community.

“The McKinney Rotary has been in existence for over 90 years,” said David Dorman, a liaison with the Rotary District Governor. “I’ve been a member there for years and they are inspired and in awe of what the Melissa Rotary Club has done.”

“For example; most Rotary Clubs don’t start an American Flag Lease program because of the tremendous amount of work required,” Dorman said. “However this club took it on before you were even one year old (or even an official club) and did a superb job.” The Melissa Rotary’s American flag lease project raised over $3,500 and covers Melissa in American flags on 6 holidays.

The good works of the Melissa Rotary Club have not gone unnoticed with the District Governor of Rotary making 3 visits to the Club in its short existence.
“This Club is not political, it’s not a social club, it’s not about anything but helping your fellow citizens and this Club is making a huge impact in Melissa and will do so for years to come,” Dorman said.

The Melissa Rotary has also announced its Rotary business Partnership Program and has secured pledges from area businesses to help support the efforts of the Rotary for 2011. This project alone has raised $3,500 to date.

Other projects for 2011 include an expansion of the American Flag Lease Program, Rotary’s Kids Our Kids Respite program for special needs children, an Interact Group partnering with high school and Junior High students, an upcoming canned food drive, a fallen soldiers monument that will be gifted to the city, continued volunteer events with various non-profit agencies including the Samaritan Inn to name just a few.

“What we have coming up in 2011 is a well rounded and well planned menu of community service projects that will continue to serve our mission of ‘service above self’” said Taiyari.

Mudpies and Lullabies is looking at plans to build it's 3rd building that will be used as a multi-purpose gymnasium and educational center. This facility will be used by the school but will also be a place where ballet, dance, karate, piano and voice lessons will be offered after operating hours by outside vendors. The plans are in the works and construction should begin soon. The expansion will take the schools occupancy to over 300 students and will require hiring aproximately 10 new teachers. The Memorial Day weekend ushered in a new era for Melissa residents anxious to display their patriotism. Over 100 new American flags were placed throughout the Liberty subdivision and other local sites as a show of patriotic unity.

The Melissa Rotary canvassed Melissa and sold the flags to Melissa Residents as part of the 1st Annual Melissa Flag Lease program. For a $30 donation, a resident or business owner leases a flag that will be placed at their home or business on five holidays in 2010.

The Rotarians have partnered with Boy Scout Troop 413 as a fundraiser for both local non-profit agencies. The program is administered and managed by the Melissa Rotary.

“The Flag Lease program is a Rotarian tradition,” said J.J. Chapa, Melissa Rotary Member. “Chapters all over the country implement this unique program as a way to raise funds and display a sense of community and national pride.”

The Melissa Rotary received its charter in April 2010 and is in its infancy as a chapter. To date, the chapter has given out over $1,700 in cash gifts to families and groups that have requested or needed donations. The group plans to do much more and the Flag Lease Fundraiser will serve as the springboard.

“We had discussions early on if this Flag Lease Program was too ambitious for our first major fundraiser,” said Don Nicolini, Melissa Rotary member. “However, our group took the bull by the horns and made it happen.”

The Flag Lease program’s first year was limited to mostly Liberty Subdivision participation. Over the next couple of years, the program will expand to the rest of Melissa.

“We needed to start out with a small first step,” said Don Nicloini, Melissa Rotary Member.

Randy Kaiser, Don Nicolini and J.J. Chapa served as Flag Lease chairs for 2010. Albert Cervantes, Randy Kaiser, Danielle Aldridge and Julie Anderson paved the way for soliciting for the most donations. All Rotarians committed to sell two flags. The Boy Scouts went door to door to round out the sales.

“Our first attempt at sponsorships for our program lead to over 100 flags being installed for Memorial Day Weekend,” Nicolini said. “We actually ran out of flags.”

When Memorial Day rolls around, there will be more American Flags out in the Liberty Subdivision that normal. The Melissa Rotary and the Boy Scouts are teaming up to cover the subdivision in the Stars and Stripes.

For a small donation of $30, the Scouts will place a flag at your home and take it down on five holidays. This community service event is carried out all over the DFW area and is now being offered in Melissa.

Participation is at a fevered pace and you could very well have the only house on your block that isn't participating.

City Council Approves Contract with CodeRED, Weather Warning
What if an emergency situation arose in Melissa and all or portions of the city were affected?
How can people be notified? The City has implemented a new tool called CodeRED, an
emergency notification system capable of placing up to 60,000 telephone calls per hour. A
pre-recorded message will be delivered telling residents and businesses about the situation
and what action needs to be taken if any. When a situation arises in Melissa, City staff will
turn to the Internet and the CodeRED mapping tools to designate a call area based on addresses.
With the push of a few buttons, a pre-recorded message describing the situation
will be delivered to a live person or an answering machine in the affected area, possibly including instructions requiring action on
the part of the recipient. CodeRED is a geographical based system where street addresses are needed to select the telephone numbers
that will receive emergency notification calls. A calling database has been supplied by Emergency Communications Network
with the best known phone numbers for the addresses in Melissa; however this calling list does not initially contain unlisted or cellular
telephone numbers. Beginning in January, residents and businesses may add their numbers to the calling database by
clicking on the CodeRED icon on the City of Melissa website (www.cityofmelissa.com) and following the instructions. No one
should automatically assume his or her telephone number is included. All businesses should register, as well as all
individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, those who have changed their phone number or address within the last year and
those who use a cellular phone as their home phone. The system works with cellular phones but requires a Melissa street address.
People who have recently moved to the City but kept the same listed or unlisted number will need to input their current address
into the database. When entering information, please fill out all of the screens. The newest data entered will replace the old data.
CodeRED will be used for emergencies or disasters that might call for action like evacuation, sheltering in place, or boiling contaminated
water, but may also be used in situations that are non-emergency related. For more information about CodeRED, call

Weather Warning
Weather Warning is an early warning system designed to
deliver severe weather warnings to your telephone within
seconds after being issued by the National Weather Service
(NWS). Subscribers to Weather Warning service receive recorded
message alerts anytime severe weather threatens their
local area...24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Weather
Warning would initiate a call for 3 types of severe
weather: Tornado, Flash Flood, and Severe Thunderstorm
warnings. The system is designed to call each subscriber once
per hour (per event); even if duplicate warnings have been
issued. Weather Warning calls are only delivered for severe
weather WARNINGS. Weather Warning calls are
not delivered for severe weather WATCHES.

Aguirre Fund Established At Melissa Bank
Early yesterday morning, Wednesday, December 17th, we as a community began to receive the regretful news that a beloved Melissa family was involved in a fatal car accident south of Dallas on Tuesday morning. More specifically, Stephanie Aguirre, a fifth grade student enrolled at Melissa Ridge Intermediate School, did not survive the accident. Stephanie's younger sister and father also sustained serious injury and remain under the watchful care of physicians in two separate local hospitals. Predictably, as word began to spread, the caring and supportive nature of the individual residents who comprise our community began to emerge. As a result, you may want to be aware that a support fund has been established for the Aguirre family at the Melissa branch of First National Bank of Trenton. Rarely, in the course of a persons history can they look back and pinpoint a great decision. Sometimes a decision may look good from one side, but on getting on the other side, the choice became bad. More often than not, our choices leave us scratching our heads more than anything.

The great deicisions are a rare thing. However, I can honestly say that moving to Melissa was one of the greatest choice my family ever made. The community is tight knit, the schools are good, the home values are strong and the development has been well planned.

I encourage you to come out and visit and let me give you a personal tour of our little community, in the thick of Texas.
